རྒྱལ་ཆེན་སྡེ་བཞི

Four Heavenly Kings; 四大天王, 劍琴傘龍, 風調雨順; Tibetan: རྒྱལ་ཆེནསྡེབཞི (Gyalchen De Shyi); Wylie: rgyal chen sde bzhi; Sanskrit: Catur Maharaja;

Four Heavenly Kings (Catur Maharaja) are the guardians of the universe. They live on the fourth level slopes of Mount Meru:

  • East: Dhrtarastra 東方持國天王
  • South: Virudhaka 南方增長天王
  • West: Virupaksha 西方廣目天王
  • North: Vaisravana 北方多聞天王

They each lead a legion of supernatural beings to protect dharma and practitioners. They are found at the entrance of many temples and monasteries.
